NCAA Tournament 2013 Round Up: Oregon Beats Saint Louis; Vander Blue’s Marquette Survive Butler, Reaches Sweet 16

Here’s a round up from the recently concluded games of the NCAA Tournament 2013.

OregonLive.com reports that despite a rough start against a physical Saint Louis defense, the 12th-seeded Oregon Ducks surged to a 74-57 third-round victory over the No. 4 Billikens. The Ducks will advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2007. This will be the first trip to the regional semifinals for University of Oregon coach Dana Altman and his ninth NCAA Tournament.

The Ducks closed the first half on a 31-12 run to take a 35-19 halftime lead at intermission following a Jonhnathan Loyd 3-pointer, moments before the buzzer. Next for Oregon will be Louisville, NCAA Tournament 2013’s no. 1 overall seed, whom they will play against on Sunday in Indianapolis.

Oregon’s win is considered an upset victory over St. Louis.

In Kentucky, Vander Blue and the Golden Eagles advances as the Bulldogs couldn’t garner anymore of their March magic streak.

Blue scored 19 half-points to rally third-seeded Marquette, and the Golden Eagles came through at 74-72 on Saturday to reach a coveted spot at the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament of 2013.

“I know everybody in our team, we weren’t ready to go home,” says Blue. He made a last-second layup to clinch a win for Marquette’s first game in the tournament. “We had two close games – we had a lot of those this year. What we went through earlier this year prepared us for this weekend.”

Marquette (25-28) will be facing the winner of today’s game between Illinois and Miami (Fla.) on Thursday in the East Regional semifinals at Washington, D.C.

This will mark Marquette’s third consecutive Sweet 16 appearance, but the Golden Eagles are eyeing to effectively move past this round for the first time since 2003. It was current Miami Heat shooting guard Dwyane Wade who led the Marquette to their Final Four round that year.

Vander Blue, who finished 29 points during the game said that, “there were multiple times we could have gave up. But there’s something about this group. We’re relentless and we want to win. We’re not ready to go home yet.”

The Bulldogs, who seem to win every close game at this point of the tournament couldn’t get a good last look. Smith took an off-balance 3 from up top that was way off, which slammed into the backboard and gave another reason for Marquette to celebrate.
