Costa Rica Files Protest With FIFA Following Snowy Loss In World Cup Qualifying With The United States

Costa Rica filed a protest with FIFA after its loss to the United States Friday in World Cup qualifying play.

The Costa Rican federation told the Associated Press (AP) Sunday that the "physical integrity" of players and officials was affected, "ball movement became impossible" and field markings were not visible in Friday's match played in Commerce City, Colo.

Costa Rican Football Federation Treasurer Rolando Villalobos said in a statement Sunday that documentation had been sent to FIFA to back the claim, including photographs and videos.

"What happened the night of Friday the 22nd ... has no precedents, since it not only went against the sporting spectacle, but also against the physical integrity of the officials and players," the statement said.

The U.S. captain, Clint Dempsey scored the only goal of the World Cup qualifier. This victory for the U.S. catapulted the country into second place of the six-team CONCACAF region and put Costa Rica at the bottom.

World Cup 2014 takes place in Brazil. The top three teams from each region automatically qualify, while the fourth-place team faces New Zealand in a playoff.

During Friday's game, plows and shovels were used to clear the penalty areas, center circle and midfield stripe as snow got heavier, and a yellow-and-purple ball was used, the AP reported.

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto urged the referee to suspend the game, but U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann made a case for playing on because both teams faced the same conditions.

At one point, the game paused as referees discussed whether or not to continue, but ultimately decided to resume play.

For the protest to have a chance of succeeding, it must meet specific requirements stated in the 2014 World Cup Regulations.

According to the AP, one clause says that when a field becomes unplayable, the protesting team's captain "shall immediately lodge a protest with the referee in the presence of the captain of the opposing team."'

The United States will next play Tuesday in Mexico City against Mexico, which has two points compared to U.S.'s three. Costa Rica will play Tuesday, hosting Jaimaca, which has three points to Costa Rica's one.

If Costa Rica wins its appeal, the loss to the United States could be thrown out.
