Detroit Tigers Pitcher Virgil Trucks Dies At 95

Virgil "Fire" Trucks died Saturday at his home near Birmingham Alabama. Trucks was a MLB pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and helped the Tigers win a World Series in 1945.

Virgil Trucks threw 2 no hitters for the Detroit Tigers during what is considered a dreadful 1952 season. Virgil Trucks was the last visiting pitcher to throw a no hitter at Yankee Stadium.

Charter Funeral Home and Crematory in Calera Alabama confirmed Virgil Trucks died, but did not give a cause of death. Trucks died at age 95.

During his career Virgil Trucks played with the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. Trucks is one of only five pitchers to throw 2 no-hitters in a single season.

The other three pitchers are Johnny Vander Meer, Allie Reynolds, Nolan Ryan and Roy Halladay.

The owner of the Detroit Tigers, Mike Llitch released a statement after learning of Virgil Trucks death.

"Virgil will forever be remembered for his significant contributions in Tigers history. Virgil remained a friend to the club following his career and will be greatly missed by those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him," he said.

Virgil Trucks was born in Alabama. He is a member of the sports hall of fame in both Alabama and Michigan. Trucks also served his country during WWII. In 1944 he put his baseball career on hold and joined the Navy. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval base. At the end of the year he went over to the Pacific.

Virgil Trucks began his career with the Detroit Tigers and finished with the New York Yankees.
