NBC Bans Robin Roberts Tweet: Execs Told Ann Curry Told She Couldn't Offer Her Rival Anchor Support On Twitter After She Was Already Fired From 'Today'

NBC execs banned Ann Curry from offering a tweet of support to rival anchor Robin Roberts, when it was announced the "Good Morning American" host had the illness MDS, according to New York Magazine.

NBC banned Ann Curry from sending the Robin Roberts tweet, despite the fact that Savannah Guthrie on had already replaced her as co-anchor "Today."

"Ann Curry was gone but not gone, which created a situation of spectacular awkwardness," reporter Joe Hagan wrote for the magazine. "Any trust that had existed between Curry and 'Today' was shattered.

"When Robin Roberts left 'Good Morning America' a month later to get treatment for MDS, Curry asked NBC if she could tweet a note of sympathy for the ABC co-host NBC said no, afraid she was trying to aid the enemy."

Earlier this month Matt Lauer, expressed his dissatisfaction with how ABC handled the Ann Curry situation, beyond the banned Robin Roberts tweets.

""I don't think the show and the network handled the transition well," he told the Daily Beast in his first interview about the woeful situation at 'Today,'" Lauer told the Daily Beast. "You don't have to be Einstein to know that, it clearly did not help us. We were seen as a family, and we didn't handle a family matter well."

In Howard Kurtz's March 11 article, NBC Universal Chief Executive Steve Burke recalls Lauer being ready to walk.

"If you think the show's better off without me, let me know, and I'll get out of the way," Burke recalled Lauer saying.

"You're the best person who's ever done this," Burke reportedly told Lauer. "We'll get through this."

Lauer doesn't recall the period fondly.

"It was a hard time for everybody," he told Kurtz. "We were getting kicked around a lot. Some of it was self-inflicted and perhaps deserved."
