Michelle Shocked Performs Outside Cancelled Show: Singer Covers Face, Tapes Mouth Shut With 'Silenced By Fear' Sticker

Michelle Shocked surprised fans Thursday night when she showed up with her guitar outside the Santa Cruz, Calif. venue where she had been scheduled to play, before her anti-gay comments onstage at Yoshi's in San Francisco on March 17 caused promoters to cancel the show.

Concert attendees at Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz might not have known it was Michele Shocked at first glance.

The singer's face was covered by what looked like a skullcap with the eyes cut out. She wore a plastic suit that she asked fans to sign with a black marker.

Shocked's mouth was taped up with a sticker that read "Silenced By Fear."

Still wearing her trademark sunglasses, Michelle performed her songs on an acoustic guitar, and sang as well as anyone could with a bandage over their mouth, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier that day, Shocked had tweeted her plans to appear outside the cancelled show.

"Moe's in S Cruz tonight ok?" Michelle wrote. "It's an art project 'My Summer Vacation' I want your autograph. Bring Sharpie."

Shocked had been replaced that night by the bands Frootie Flavors and Beaver Fever.

Club owner Bob Welch, who spoke with Michelle Shocked outside the cancelled show, said they wouldn't be badmouthing the singer at the show.

"We will not be bashing Michelle Shocked," he said. "Rather we will celebrate music, diversity and send some healing Santa Cruz energy her way."

Michelle Shocked's anti-gay slur at the San Francisco show caused the singer to cancel at least five planned performances, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"You are going to leave here and tell people, 'Michelle Shocked said God hates f*gs," Shocked said to the near the beginning of her second set on March 17.

The lights at Yoshi's immediately dimmed and her microphone was reportedly turned off.
