India Arie skin lightening claims after she released the cover image of hew new single "Cocoa Butter."

The R&B singer seems to look a few shed lighter than usual. This is a surprising move from someone that is known to promote black beauty that is notably expressed in her hit songs "Brown Skin" and "I Am Not My Hair."

According to TMZ sources close to singer stated her "lightened" skin tone is the result of the camera flash and angle, adding that she never asked to be lightened.

Arie took to Twitter on Friday denying the accusations stating, "Personally speaking! I'm happy to say I have NOT BLEACHED my skin LOL! ROTF at the thought."

She added, "1. I wouldn't endanger my health that way 2. i'm so in love with myself I have no DESIRE to BLEACH myself. Lol. 3. The GLOW you see IS (magnificent) lighting 4. THE LIGHT you see, Well thats all ME!!"

The controversy surrounding skin lightening isn't uncommon in show business. As celebrities are accused many times for "lightening" their skin as a departure from their natural, dark color, including Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Dawn Richards and  Lil' Kim.
