Tony Romo $108 Million Contract Extension Reached With Cowboys, Highest Paid Player in Franchise History

Quarterback Tony Romo reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension worth $108 million with the Dallas Cowboys Friday.

The agreement makes him the highest-paid player in franchise history. As he entered the final year of his contract, he is to receive $55 million guaranteed. It will lower the quarterback's salary-cap number for 2013 by $5 million.

The team's website reports, ""The contract pays Romo more than $17 million per season, putting him just outside the top five among highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. Recently, Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco received just $52 million in guaranteed cash."

"Absolutely, we feel that we can win a championship with Tony," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told USA TODAY Sports. "We wouldn't be doing all of this if we didn't think we could win with him."

The contract is to take effect in 2014 and will run through 2019, giving him a chance to be the starter long then 11 seasons of Troy Aikman and seven of Roger Staubuch, who was a part time-time start his first four years with the Cowboys.

"I think it's just exciting, more than anything, that you know you're going to be here the rest of my career," Romo said in a video on the team's website. "We're a team on the rise and I think it's going to show here going forward."

Donovan McNabb, the six-time Pro Bowler and NFL Network analyst shared his shock through a tweet Friday, "Wow really, with one playoff win. You got to be kidding me..."

"It's not all on Tony's shoulders," Jones said. "He has to do his part, but the team around him has to play better, and we also have to coach better."

"We've always looked at him as a great quarterback," Stephen Jones said. "He wants to win a championship as much as anybody. But it's on all of us."
