Missing Hiker Found Alive, 23-Year-Old Mary Owen In Fair Condition

A missing hiker was found alive Saturday and was rescued by an Oregon National Guard helicopter crew. She spent a week at Mount Hood and is in fair condition at a Portland hospital, the Associated Press reports.

Clackamas County sheriff’s spokesman Marcus Mendoza said that 23-year-old and George Fox University senior Mary Owen was found Saturday morning on Sandy Glacier. A helicopter crew spotted her and immediately flew the hiker to Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

She was found after a second day of searching by rescue teams coming from a host of agencies around the Portland, OR area. She was reported missing at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, said Deputy Bryon O’Neil of the county sheriff’s office.

Mendoza said that Owen has frostbite and possibly a fractured ankle.

The hiker was on spring break and had not been in communication with friends or relatives since last Saturday, when she emailed a friend to say that she was going for a hike and planned to return that night or the next day.

The search began Friday when authorities found her SUV in the Timberline Lodge parking lot.

This is not Owen’s first hiking experience. She is an experienced backpacker who previously hiked the length of the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.

Citing this incident, authorities are reminding hikers to always inform someone where you are going and when you are planning to return.
