Matt Flynn Traded To The Oakland Raiders: Going To Compete For Starting QB Job, And Carson Palmer Might Be On His Way To The Arizona Cardinals

The Oakland Raiders acquired quarterback Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks for two draft picks Monday, which include a fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft and a conditional pick in 2015.

Sources told ESPN that the Raiders also are trying to finalize a trade that will send their 2012 starting quarterback Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals for minimal compensation.

"I've known Matt Flynn since 2007 and scouted him before and after he entered the NFL," Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a statement on the team's website. "Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback. He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn't had enough experience.

McKenzie was the Green Bay Packers' director of football operations before he was hired as the Raiders' general manager last year. He was able to observe the 27-year-old quarterback who spent four years with Green Bay.

Flynn was the backup to former Super Bowl champion Aaron Rodgers. When he was giving the chance to make two starts at quarterback, he threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in one of those starts against the Detroit Lions in 2011.

"We're going to let him compete and battle, and see what happens. We know Raider Nation wants a team that can compete for the playoffs year-in and year-out and we're putting in the necessary work right now to make that happen. This is one of the many decisions in that process."

Palmer is scheduled to make $13 million in base salary this season and a source told ESPN that it is unlikely he would agree to restructure his contract.

The 33-year-old Palmer passed for 4,018 yards with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season for the Raiders, who acquired the quarterback from the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2011 season for a 2012 first-round draft pick and a second-round selection in the 2013 draft.

If Palmer gets traded to the Arizona Cardinals, then he has a chance to be the starter there.

The former BCS National Champion with LSU signed with Seattle before the 2012 season. The Seahawks also drafted Russell Wilson in the third round of the NFL draft. Wilson won the starting quarterback job and never let go of it.

Seattle made the postseason and won a playoff game until eliminated by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round.

Thriving as a rookie, Wilson left Flynn to a role on the bench, racking in money, but not being able to get a chance to start.
