Opening day Monday was to start of another long MLB season, but in a sport over a 100 years old, it might be the first time a rosin bag exploded in the middle of a game.

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher AJ Burnett went to pick up the rosin bag and slapped it against his backside twice before rubbing his hands on it. When he brought the bag in front of himself, the bag exploded right before his eyes.

The game was delayed momentarily for Burnett to clean up the mess.

The exploding rosin bag brought up the question if it was an April Fool's Day prank or not, since it was April 1. Yahoo! reported what Burnett said when asked.

"If so, it was a pretty good one," Burnett told reporters after the game. "That's my day: One (bad) pitch (for a two-run homer by Anthony Rizzo) and the rosin bag."

Burnett struck out 10 in the 3-1 loss, which he suffered his first loss of the season to the Chicago Cubs. He pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up the two-run homerun to Anthony Rizzo.

A rosin bag is used for better ball control for by baseball pitchers. Often, the pitcher walks off the mound to pick up the bag, toss it a few times before stepping back on the mound.
