Hundreds Of College Students In Egypt Struck With Food Poisoning, Angry Students Storm University

Almost 500 college students from Egypt were hospitalized with food poisoning after eating food from the university's dorms on Monday.

Cairo's Al-Azhar University is a Sunni Muslim learning facility. The school also offers degrees in science and the humanities. The 479 students suffering from food poisoning were taken to various hospitals all over Egypt's capital.

The food poisoning was a result of poor sanitary conditions around the university dorms. CBS News says that lack of proper hygiene is not uncommon for college dorms in Egypt. This latest outbreak of food poisoning is the worst one in years.

Angry students gathered outside the university on Monday to protest the improper sanitary conditions they are forced to live in and eat under. The students blocked the roads and chanted slurs against the university.

On Tuesday the angry students stormed the office of Ahmed el-Tayeb the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University. There is no word on whether or not the Grand Imam was in his office when the students broke in.

Egypt's president Mohammed Morsi visited some of the students at one of the several Cairo hospitals they were admitted to. To show how serious the Egyptian government is taking the incident the top prosecutor in the country ordered an investigation into the food poisoning outbreak.
