Robinson Cano Signs With Jay-Z: The New York Yankees Star Drops Agent Scott Boras To Sign To Roc Nation Sports

New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano signed with rapper Jay-Z' formation of a new sports representation group, Roc Nation Sports Tuesday, the same day he fired Scott Boras as his agent.

"At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors on and off the field," Cano said in a statement. "I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates."

ESPN also reported that Jay-Z is planning to become a certified agent himself.

Cano will be represented directly by C.A.A. Sports' Brodie Van Wagenen. C.A.A. is also closely affiliated with the Knicks, representing Carmelo Anthony and Coach Mike Woodson, among others, the New York Times reported.

The four-time all-star is set to be a free agent after the 2013 season. Rumors swirled on whether or not Cano was seeking a 10-year contract and possibly one of the richest contracts in MLB history.

"Robinson Cano is an extraordinary all-around talent who has established himself as one of the game's best and most consistent players," Van Wagenen told the Times. "Our mandate is to minimize his distractions while helping him achieve his goals on and off the field in both the short and the long term. His immediate concern is continuing to show respect for the Yankees organization, his teammates and the fans."

Scott Boras represents more than 175 professional athletes. He has been known to get the maximum amount of dollars and years for his clients. His list of clients include Prince Fielder, Stephan Strausburg, Barry Zito and Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is signed to play with the Yankees until 2017. He earns $27.5 million a year.
