Senator Arrested in New York, Malcolm Smith Faces 45 Years For Corruption And Bribery

A senator was arrested in New York Tuesday morning as part of a public corruption probe.

Malcolm Smith along with other politicians has allegedly pot to rig the upcoming mayoral election in New York City, including Republican NYC Councilman Dan Halloran.

Federal prosecutors say Smith paid tens of thousands of dollars in efforts to get himself on the ballot as a GOP candidate.

Halloran and four other political figures were charged in what U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara called "an uappetizing smorgasbord of graft and greed involving six officials who together built a corridor of corruption stretching from Queens and the Bronx to Rockland County and all the way up to Albany itself."

"Smith drew up the game plan and Councilman Halloran essentially quarterbacked that drive by finding party chairmen who were wide open to receiving bribes," Bharara said in a statement.

Smith and other politicians were bused after a cooperating witness and an undercover FBI agent worked with the men on the alleged plan. There were reportedly several bribery plans in the works to get Smith where he wanted to be in New York politics.

Smith is facing up to 45 years in prison if convicted of conspiracy, wire fraud and violation of the Hobbs Act. Halloran potentially faces the same penalty as Smith if he is found guilty of the charges against him of conspiracy and two counts of wire fraud.

Smith has been a state senator since March 2000 said that he'll be vindicated. His lawyer Gerald L. Shargel said his client denies any wrongdoing.

"Malcolm Smith is a dedicated public servant who has served both the state of New York and his constituents in an exemplary fashion," Shargel said. "He steadfastly denies the allegations that are contained in the complaint."
