911 Dispatcher Sends Mom to Rescue Kayaker in Washington, Because She Can Arrive Faster Than Police Patrol

A 911 dispatcher sent her mom to rescue a stranded boater in the Columbia River in Washington, knowing her mom could reach the area faster than the sheriff's office patrol boat.

A 45-year-old female kayaker was waiting while hanging onto a log Sunday afternoon after swift water currents sank her kayak.

Wahkiakum County dispatcher, Raedyn Grasseth after putting a call into the sheriff's office also thought to notify her mom, Cindy Faubion and other family members that lived nearby.

"I knew they could be there within five to 10 minutes," Grasseth said.

"Jetties are very dangerous," Grasseth said Monday. "The currents around them are horrible. It sounds likes her kayak just got sucked toward the jetty and went down."

The stranded woman "hung onto the jetty until she could climb up and get onto as much of the log pilling as she could and waited," Grasseth said.

Faubion and other family members quickly paddled to the pilling in a kayak and succeeded in rescuing the stranded kayaker. She fortunately wasn't in condition of needing medical attention, however was cold and shaken from the experience.

"She's lucky she's alive, plain and simple," Grasseth said.
