Body in Towed Car From North Carolina Crash Scene, Discovered Three Days Later

A body of a North Carolina woman was discovered inside the wrecked vehicle from the crash scene, three days after a state trooper ordered it to be towed away.

Relatives of Carolyn Ann Watkins, 62, found her 2000 Pontiac Sunfire on Friday at a ditch near Swift Creek Road, around 4 miles of Smithfield. However she was nowhere to be found.

Accident report filed by N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Marlon Williams said, "Note: No driver (was) at the scene of this collision."

Smithfield police officer searching for clues about Watkins disappearance discovered her body Monday evening.

"They were looking for her pocketbook and the keys, and when they started searching, that's when they found the body in the car," son Algernon Parker told the station.

"I'm thinking she could still have been alive," Parker said Tuesday. "How do you not look in the car? When you pulled the car out, how do you not see a body in the car?"

"They didn't do their job properly, and we want some answers," Parker said.

"First and foremost, we offer our most sincere condolences to Carolyn Watkins' family," Public Safety Commissioner Frank Perry said in a statement. "Our main concern is to conduct a thorough and professional investigation so we can determine exactly what happened."

Williams currently has been placed on paid administrative duty waiting for the outcome of an internal review, with the help of State Bureau Investigation.

"We will release accurate information to the public as soon as available and appropriate," Perry said. "At this early stage, our main concern is to conduct a thorough and professional investigation so we can determine exactly what happened."
