Tanning Bed Ban: New Jersey Bans Minor Using Commercial Tanning Beds [VIDEO]

Tanning bed ban has been signed by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie into law on Monday for children under 17, after a mother was accused of taking her 5-year-old daughter to a tanning booth.

"Governmental regulation of the private sector should always be carefully scrutinized, and sparingly adopted," he said in a statement. "The new restrictions imposed by this bill followed a single but breathlessly reported incident of a parent bringing a minor child into a tanning facility."

Patricia Krentcil, aka "Tanning Mom," the North Jersey resident was arrested last April after daughter showed up with sunburn and officials accused her of taking her to a tanning booth.

Krentcil has denied the allegations and a grand jury did not indict her on charges of endangering the welfare of the child over lack of evidence.

Now with the tanning ban in place, anyone under 17 cannot use a tanning bed also minors 14 and under cannot have a spray tan application, however a 17-year-old can enter a tanning booth with a parental consent on their first visit.

Governor Christie signed the bill primarily because of "documented and well-understood" evidence that points to dangers for minors, noting skin cancer risk and increase risk of melanoma by 75 percent.
