Mark Cuban Drafting Brittany Griner To The Dallas Mavericks? He Says Quite Possibly To The First Woman In The NBA

NBA history could be made if Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban really drafts the possible first woman to play in the NBA, Brittney Griner.

"If she is the best on the board, I will take her," Cuban said before the Mavs' Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. "I've thought about it. I've thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it's not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it."

At Baylor, Griner lead the team to a national championship last year. She is expected to the first overall pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, but Cuban sells the reality of bringing Griner to the Dallas Mavericks.

"I would hold my own! Lets do it," Griner wrote on her Twitter account Tuesday night in response to Cuban's comments.

Nobody before in NCAA women's basketball dunked with the ease that Griner had. She had 18 dunks, including 11 and her senior season. In her four-year career, she scored 3,283 points and blocked 748 shots.

"She'd still have to make the team," Cuban said. "I'm not going to carry her just to carry her. I don't think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn't be opposed to giving her the opportunity."

Griner and the Baylor Lady Bears were upset in the Sweet 16 of the women's NCAA tournament to Louisville. Baylor was the favorite to win the championship, but knocked out much earlier than expected.

"I'm just sad," Griner told the Associated Press. "I didn't do what I needed to do to get my team to the Elite Eight and just disappointed in myself."

If Griner really does get the opportunity to be a part of the NBA, it could garner a ton of media attention.

"It would, wouldn't it? See how she could do?" Cuban said. "That'd sell out a few games."

Cuban is a business outside of the NBA. Making an extra buck comes natural to the Mavericks' owner. He is also the owner of Landmark Theaters, Magnolia Pictures and chairman of the HDTV cable network, AXS TV.
