Southampton Says “Neigh” To Matt Lauer's Horse Farm

The exclusive town of Southampton New York has issued a stop work order on the property Matt Lauer was converting to a horse farm.

The Today Show host Matt Lauer purchased 40 acres of land for $3.5 million last year and began construction on a large horse farm. The property is supposed to have an indoor riding ring, luxury stables and a house for Lauer's groomsmen.

The people of Southampton were never happy with Matt Lauer's horse farm and have been trying to shut it down since before construction began.

The stop work order was posted last month. The issue with Lauer's horse farm is the residence he wants to build for his groomsmen. The order says Lauer cannot put a home on the farm but he can "build structures necessary for agricultural related business."

A source for Matt Lauer spoke with the New York Post. The source said, "When tearing down the old office they found rot. We need to fix the roof before we can begin again."

The New York Post says that Lauer's construction crew filed all of the paperwork needed to resume work on the horse farm as soon as possible. The source also told the New York Post "We're not at odds with the town."

The Daily Mail has evidence to contradict the source's statement suggesting Matt Lauer's horse farm is not causing tension in the town.

According to the Daily Mail neighbors believe Lauer's horse farm is too big and will cause too many problems for the area. Resident Dee Hunter says, It's just too big. They presented this as a little old family farm. But there is supposed to be room for thirty horses? Do they each ride six horses?"

Harriet Whittenberg also lives in the area. The Daily Mail quotes her as saying, "Just because Lauer and his wife have this dream doesn't mean that you can take down the quality of life for everyone."

Matt Lauer spoke with Extra about his horse farm before the stop work order was issued.

"My wife is very much into horses and my children are into horses. We have a dream to have a place where we can keep some horses and ride year round."

Lauer also admitted to Extra he doesn't ride anymore and he is a little nervous when it comes to climbing on the back of an animal much bigger than he is. There is no further information on when Matt Lauer will resume work on his horse farm.
