One Of The Two Hikers Missing In California Was Found Three Days Later: The Search Is Ongoing For The Other Teenager That's Still Missing

One of the two hikers who went missing in California Sunday was found Wednesday, while the search for the second hiker continues.

Nicholas Cendoya, 19, was discovered by a hiker shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday, the Associated Press (AP) reported. The search for his friend, Kyndall Jack, 19, continued Thursday.

"He (Cendoya) was extremely confused and disoriented," Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Park told the AP.

Cendoya was airlifted to a hospital where he was talking to paramedics and authorities, but struggled to answer any of their questions. Authorities hoped to get help from Cendoya on the whereabouts of Jack. They said they would wait until Cendoya recovers first.

Jack and Cendoya made a 911 call Sunday while they reportedly went off trail at Southern California's Cleveland National Forest. While calling from a dying phone, they said they were a mile away from their car.

"When you're disoriented because you're out of breath and tired and you think you're one mile away, you could be potentially three or four miles away," Orange County Fire Authority Capt. John Muir told the AP. "There's a lot of ground to cover."

Muir said earlier that Cendoya and Jack's "probability for survival is good" with mild weather both day and night.

The hiker who came across Cendoya notified a nearby firefighting crew, which happened to be in the area.

When the rescuer was lowered to save Cendoya, the rescuer lost sight of him. The brushes were reportedly so thick; it was tough to save the teenager.

Two volunteers who tried to search and rescue the two had to be airlifted themselves.

The area is in a section of the national forest in the Santa Ana Mountains, which lie along the border of Orange and Riverside counties southeast of Los Angeles. The trail ranges in elevation from about 2,000 feet to about 4,000 feet, according to USA Today.

Jack's mother arrived at the canyon, writing out on her daughter's car, "Kyndall - we r looking wont stop love you mom," and signed it with a heart.
