1972 Olympic Champion Dies At 73-Years-Old: Greco-Roman Gold Medalist Nicolae Martinescu Of Romania Dies

A 1972 Olympic gold medalist died Thursday in Vevey, Switzerland. Nicolae Martinescu of Romania died at the age of 73.

Martinescu won the gold medal in Greco-Roman heavyweight class at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. He also won a light-heavyweight bronze medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Governing body FILA said, "all our thoughts are for his family and the Romanian Wrestling Federation." No further details on his death have been released.

The 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany was known for an attack in which 11 members of the Israeli team were taken hostage and killed, as well as a German police officer by the Palestinian group, Black September.

According to the Independent and the Jewish Press, Black September demanded the release of 234 prisoners held in Israeli jails, and the release of the founders, Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof of the German Red Army Faction, who were held in German prisons.

In February 2013, the International Olympic Committee voted to remove the wrestling from the 2020 Summer Olympics onwards.

Greco-Roman wrestling dates back in the Olympics to 1896. It lasted well over a 100 years and 2016 will mark the end for now of wrestling at the Olympics.

Martinescu and Romania won seven gold medals during the Greco-Roman wrestling era at the Olympics.
