Missing Ohio Family Found Safe After Spending The Night Stranded In The Dangerous Florida Everglades

An Ohio family that went missing from an airboat excursion in the Florida Everglades has been found.

The missing family's father, Scott Schredk, told reporters that he took a wrong turn in the wilderness of the Florida everglades, and couldn't get the airboat turned around. Schreck, his wife and their three sons spent a rainy night in the Everglades, but officials say all members of the Ohio family are in good condition.

The missing family was originally from Seville Ohio, and was found on Friday April 5, after search and rescue teams heard them blowing whistles and an air horn.

The family was found after a massive search was organized, including helicopters, airplanes and at least six airboats, according to the Associated Press.

A helicopter spotted the family in thick vegetation, where their airboat got stuck, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino. The vegetation was so dense that the family was hidden at ground level, even from nearby.

Pino said, "We weren't able to see them, we were only able to hear them. They are in good condition."

The area where officials conducted the search spread over 1,000 square miles in three South Florida counties north of Everglades National Park. The region is covered in tall, sharp-edged sawgrass that minimizes visibility.

The region is also home to alligators, Florida panthers, snakes, turtles, and other birds and fish. Finding a missing family in such extreme conditions is a big challenge, commented Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Spokesman Lt. Arnold Peidrahita Jr. Making things even more difficult, the boat was painted in camouflage.

Piedrahita said, "It's like looking for a needle in a haystack."

Pino added that the family appeared to be in good health although they spent all night in the wilderness on a night that experienced strong thunderstorms and rain.

Pino said Schreck was a "savvy outdoorsman" who did the right thing in making a great deal of noise to attract search and rescue teams.

"If you get into that dense vegetation with an airboat, it's almost next to impossible to get out," he said.
