Frozen Baby Mom Sentenced To 50 Years For Leaving Her New Born Daughter To Die

Katie Stockton, also known as the "Frozen Baby Mom" was sentenced to 50 years in prison for leaving her newborn daughter on the side of a road to freeze to death in 2004.

The remains of the baby girl known dubbed "Baby Crystal" by police were found frozen on the side of a rural highway in Rock River Valley, Illinois. After an investigation that seemed to come from the pages of a Law and Order script the police were able to connect the "Frozen Baby Mom" to the infant's death.

Police initially interviewed Katie Stockton when the investigation was first opened. The "Frozen Baby Mom" denied having any children and refused to give a DNA sample. After collecting a discarded cigarette butt Stockton was smoking the police were able to use DNA to prove that "Baby Crystal" was Stockton's daughter.

On December 17, 2004 the "Frozen Baby Mom" gave birth to a daughter. After concealing her pregnancy for 9-months Stockton placed the newborn in an orange shopping bag and left the baby to freeze to death on the side of an abandoned road.

The police found the "Frozen Baby Mom's" car in an impound lot where it had been sitting for over a year. The police were searching the car for clues in "Baby Crystal's" death when they made a shocking discover in trunk of her car. The police found the skeletal remains of two newborn babies.

The babies found in the car were also newborn girls. The forensic investigators working with the police could not determine if the girls were born alive and then murdered or if they were still born.

The "Frozen Baby Mom" is not yet facing charges in the death of the babies found in her trunk. The police are still investigating that case.

The prosecutors bringing the case of "Baby Crystal" to trial had originally charged Katie Stockton with eleven counts of murder. The prosecution was willing to drop the extra charges of murder if Stockton pled to 1-count of First Degree Murder and confessed to the murder of her baby girl. The "Frozen Baby Mom" took the deal.

When it came time for her sentencing the defense attorney asked the judge for leniency but the judge felt it was undeserved. Judge John Truitt called Katie Stockton's actions "incomprehensible" and referred to the skeletons in her trunk as "deranged."

Originally facing a 60-year sentence the judge gave the "Frozen Baby Mom" 50-years in prison for the murder of her newborn daughter.
