Designer of the Tropical Print Dress Lilly Pulitzer Died In Florida At Age 81

Lilly Pulitzer died in Florida at the age of 81. Gale Schiffman of Quattlebaum Funeral and Cremation Services confirmed Lilly Pulitzer's death to the Associated Press, though she did not know the cause of death.

Lilly Pulitzer is best known for creating the tropical print dress that was very popular in the 1960's. So popular in fact First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy was photographed wearing one in a Life Magazine photo spread.

The idea for the tropical print dress came to Lilly Pulitzer when she spilt orange juice on her cloths. Pulitzer opened a juice stand in 1959 and asked her seamstress to create a pattern that would help hide juice stains.

AP reports, "The signature Lilly palette features tongue-in-cheek jungle and floral prints in blues, pinks, light greens, yellow and orange, the colors of a Florida vacation."

Pulitzer would sell her dresses from behind her fruit stand. Soon the dresses were out selling the juice. Pulitzer would start a business and expand her clothing line to swimsuits, country club attire, children's cloths, some menswear and a home collection.

"I designed collections around whatever struck my fancy...fruits vegetables, politics, or peacocks. I entered in with no business sense. It was a total change of life for me, but it made me happy," Pulitzer told AP in a 2009 interview.

In 2004 Pulitzer was quoted as saying, "Style isn't just about what you wear, it's about how you live. We focus on the best, fun, and happy things, and people want that. Being happy never goes out of style."
