Margaret Thatcher Dies From A Stroke: The Former U.K. Prime Minister Known As The 'Iron Lady' Leaves A Lasting Legacy Behind

U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died Monday.

The "Iron Lady" suffered a stroke, according to her spokesman, Tim Bell, who told Sky News television that she died peacefully.

"Very few leaders get to change not only the political landscape of their country but of the world," Tony Blair, whose Labour Party ousted the Tories from power in 1997, said in a statement on his website. "Margaret was such a leader. Her global impact was vast. And some of the changes she made in Britain were, in certain respects at least, retained by the 1997 Labour government, and came to be implemented by governments around the world."

The 87-year-old was the prime minister for over 11 years.

Meryl Streep won an Oscar for best-actress in 2011 for her role in the film "The Iron Lady," which was about Thatcher's role in office and when Thatcher began to suffer from dementia.

Thatcher was defined by the battles she took on: she waged war against Argentina, clashed with striking miners and forced fellow leaders to cut Britain's financial contributions to the forerunner of the European Union., according to Bloomberg.

"She did not just lead our country, she saved our country," Cameron said in televised comments from Madrid. "I believe she'll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister."
