Source Claims Jay-Z And Beyonce Had License To Travel To Cuba

Mega stars Jay-Z and wife Beyonce celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary by taking a trip to Cuba. The trip has since gained a lot of media attention and the couple is now being scrutinized for their trip to the communist nation.

Technically it is illegal for any United States citizen to travel to Cuba unless they have a license from the US Treasury Department. Licenses are usually only given out for educational purposes such as for students, journalists and American's with relatives living in Cuba.

An anonymous source has come forward telling Reuters that Jay-Z and Beyonce had all the legal permits necessary to travel to Cuba. The fact of the matter is that not everyone is so convinced and willing to go on the word of an unnamed source.

Three Cuban-American Republican members of Congress are asking the Treasury Department to look into Jay-Z and Beyonce's trip. According to Reuters one of the three members of Congress, US Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is a critic of the Cuban government and thinks taking a trip to Cuba showed poor taste on the part of Beyonce and Jay-Z.

Ros-Lehtinen said it was, "very disconcerting that these two mega stars would go down to Cuba and vacation as if they were in a tropical paradise and not say one word about the brutality their hosts display against all pro democracy activists."

Despite having never preformed a show in Cuba Beyonce and Jay-Z were mobbed by fans and even required police back up when trying to have dinner at a Cuban restaurant.

Reuters also reports that the Cuban government had no idea Beyonce and Jay-Z were planning to visit Cuba until they were already on their way. The report also says that Beyonce and Jay-Z did not meet with any of Cuba's government officials.

The US trade embargo which also bans US citizens from visiting Cuba without a license has been in place for the past 53 years. Although it has not lifted the embargo the Obama administration has relaxed some of the restrictions placed on those who would visit Cuba for educational, religious or cultural reasons.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issues licenses to travel to Cuba on a case-by-case basis. If it is proven that Beyonce and Jay-Z did not have permission from the US government to travel to Cuba, the penalty could be 10-years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
