Manda Meat Recall: 468,000 Pounds Of Meat Products Recalled By Louisiana-Based Company

This past week, the Louisiana-based Manda Packing Company announced a recall of 20,000 lbs of meat that has now expanded significantly. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the recall now includes a whopping 468,000 pounds of turkey breast, ham, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog headcheese, roast beef, corned beef, and pastrami.

The Manda meat products were recalled due to possible contamination with the bacteria Listeria, but no illnesses have been reported yet. The meat was shipped to retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

According to Manda's website, the products were produced in Baker, LA between February 27th and April 9th. " Josh Yarborough, director of quality assurance for Manda, said in a statement "We are committed to work with USDA in reviewing and enhancing our food safety system so we can continue to ensure that our products are safe, wholesome and worthy of our brand name."

A wide variety of products may have been contaminated, making the recall process more difficult. There were 41 different names with various sell-by date, and some of the products may have been sliced at retail delis-thus, they would not bear packaging in formation.

Eating food tainted with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which is a potentially fatal disease rarely contracted by healthy people.

In a statement, Manda said "This is an ongoing effort. These actions are being taken out of an abundance of caution, as the situation is still being investigated." They also said "Manda Fine Meats is a third-generation family business that has operated in Louisiana for more than 66 years. We produce some of the finest meat products, capturing the taste of Louisiana.... Our sausage products remain safe for purchase and consumption. We are committed to working with the USDA to review and enhance our food safety system ... our customers deserve no less."

Recently, customers in the UK were scandalized over horse meat discovered in Tesco burgers and, in the US, and Farm Rich frozen pizza and snacks were recalled over an E.Coli outbreak.
