The JFK Library Fire And Boston Marathon Bombs: Was There A Connection, Or Was It A Coincidence During Patriot's Day?

Was there a connection between the Boston Marathon bombs and the JFK Library explosion Monday?

Patriot's Day has traditionally been a day of celebration for people in the Boston area. Workers have the day off, the Red Sox play the only 11 a.m. game of the MLB season, the Bruins cap the night off with a home game and the tradition of the Boston Marathon floods the streets.

It ended up being a nightmare of a day when two bombs exploded near the finish line of the race, which killed three and injured nearly 150 people. Thus far, 25-30 people have lost limbs from the ball bearings that were connected with the bombs.

Later on in the day, a report came out that there had been a third explosion at the JFK Library around 3 p.m., which is 3.5 miles from where the first two explosions took place.

A publicly available audio feed pulled from a police radio band employed by officers dispatched to downtown Boston described a confirmed explosion at the library, according to the Atlanticwire.

"The preliminary investigation indicates the JFK incident may not have been an explosion. It may have been a fire," Commissioner Edward F. Davis said in a press conference, who originally suggested that it might have been a possible bomb.

Rachel Flor, a library spokeswoman told the Boston Globe that everyone evacuated the building in Dorchester safely and no injuries were reported.

"There was a fire, and it's still unclear how it began," Flor told reporters. "We did hear something that sounded like an explosion."

Shortly afterward, Boston police and State Police cars swarmed the library parking lot, along with authorities from the US Secret Service and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to the Boston Globe.

Thomas Putnam, the library's director, told reporters around 4 p.m. that a bomb squad was coming in as a precautionary measure in light of the marathon blasts.

Windows were shattered from the fire. An entrance way was blackened from the smoke..

Inside, damage was caused mostly by smoke and water and not that much from the fire itself. "We don't anticipate damage to the collections," Putnam said.
