Cruise Tourists Robbed At Gunpoint In Caribbean; Was Security Lax Because Of Celebrity Wedding Nearby?

On Friday a group of British tourists on a cruise in St. Lucia were robed at gunpoint while taking a bus tour on the Caribbean Island. There were 55 passengers on board the bus when it was robbed. They had come just disembarked from the Celebrity Cruise line vessel Eclipse.

The cruise ship was docked in Castries Harbor for a 12-hour stay. The ship left Fort Lauderdale Florida on April 6 and was scheduled to make stops at ports in Barbados, Grenada and Aruba and would then head back to Florida on Sunday.

None of the 55 passengers robbed at gunpoint were injured. In a statement issued by Celebrity Cruises the company said, "We are thankful that none of our guests was injured in this unfortunate event, and will continue to provide them with any support they may need."

There are reports from various other media outlets saying that a woman on the bus fell and broke her leg while being robbed.

The police on the Island are being criticized, and authorities have been forced to defend their safety record.

A few miles away from where the tourists were being robbed a large number of police were dispatched to work security at the vow renewal of actor Matt Damon and his wife. The ceremony was taking place on the private Sugar Beach Resort where Damon had booked all 78 rooms. Celebrity guest included Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Chelsea Clinton and Robert de Niro.

This St. Lucia robbery follows another highly-publicized cruise ship robbery that occurred in Central America. On the day prior to the cruise ship robbery in St. Lucia, another group of cruise ship tourists were being held up at gunpoint in Mexico.

22 passengers onboard a Carnival Cruise ship were robbed at gun point while on a bus returning to the ship. The masked robbers stole money, jewelry and other valuables from the scared tourists.

Carnival apologized to its passengers calling the incident "unfortunate and disturbing." Carnival offered to reimburse passengers for their lost valuables and help with the appropriate documentation including lost passports.

The masked gunmen in Mexico and St. Lucia have yet to be found.
