Selena Gomez In Trouble For Wearing Bindi at MTV Movie Awards; Hindu Leaders Demand Apology [VIDEO]

Hindu leaders across the US are calling for an apology from Selena Gomez for wearing a bindi on her forehead during the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. They called her performance Sunday at the awards "insensitive".

The bindi symbol is a highly sacred religious mark to Sikh women. Critics have deemed her performance of the song "Come and Get It" cultural appropriation.  Sure, white woman wearing bindis isn't a new thing - it was trendy during the 90s, most notably thanks to No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, then adopted by celebs like Madonna. Still, times have changed and the inappropriate, even offensive nature of wearing bindis is more visible now; critics say Gomez should know better.

During the performance, Gomez gyrated around the stage wearing a bindi and costumes resembling traditional Indian garb. Two backup dancers also had smaller bindis.

"The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance," Rajan Zed, a spokesman for the Universal Society of Hinduism, told WENN. "It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol... It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions."

The star also was lambasted on Twitter by numerous fans. One complained "She has no right, it's like she's mocking us, it isn't her religion, we don't go around wearing crosses. It's not our religion. We would most likely get burned to the ground if we did, why is she so special?"

Another Tweeted "Selena Gomez,  unless you're Indian or doing it for religious reasons there is no reason to wear a bindi. Change your act,"

Gomez, 20, has yet to apologize or comment.
