Nerdiest City in America Is Atlanta, Beats Out 49 Other Major Cities In USA

What is the nerdiest city in America? Real estate blog Movoto has bestowed the label to Atlanta, GA.

According to Yahoo’s Rick Limpert, Atlanta has been called many things: The ATL, The Big Peach, A-Town and more and today, it is ranked number one in America’s list of nerdiest cities, thus, giving it a new name and label.

Movoto looked at several factors when compiling the list such as: Number of annual comic book, video game, anime, and sci-fi/fantasy conventions, people per comic book store, people per video game store, people per traditional gaming store, people per computer store, people per bookstore, people per LARPing group (Live Action Role-Playing), people per science museum, and distance to the nearest Renaissance fair.

The blog mined data on the 50 most populous cities in America, then ranked the cities in each category. They then averaged the rankings out for the top 10 list and Atlanta came as number one, with Portland, OR and Seattle, WA taking a close second.

Atlanta resident, Tom Grason, who works for a major communications company in the city, said that being nerdy is a synonym for success. He explained, “"Atlanta is America's gateway to the world, with strong business community, arts, and sporting and outdoor events. If that makes us nerds, I'd hate to live anywhere else."

A lot of conventions are held in the Atlanta area and they bring dollars to the Atlanta economy in the form of money spent at hotel rooms, restaurants, and various other retail establishments around the city. The number of conventions held in the city has been a key determinant in the nerdiest city in America survey. The density of bookstores and museums in the Atlanta area has also contributed to the city's "nerdiness" factor.

Atlanta’s bastion of technology, Georgia Tech, felt great about the announcement and tweeted with pride the new accolade for the city. Through their account, @georgiatech, they posted the message: “"Atlanta named 'Nerdiest City in America' by @Movoto. If 'nerdy' is bad, we don't wanna be good. #TechProblems #GoJackets."
