For many more traditional music fans, the thing that is the most difficult to swallow about a lot of electronic dance music is the same beat appearing again and again, specifically that ubiquitous house beat that appears unavoidable, across generations and continents, for every mainstream DJ.
Yet, for anyone who has dug into the innovators of computer-generated music from Kraftwerk to Aphex Twin, the rhythm is anything but redundant or repetitive (any less than you'd want a dance song to be anyway).
There may be a thread holding the rhythm of "Wonderful As Always," the energized new single released Monday by South Korean singer and actress Solbi together, yet within that pulse the beat barely stops to catch its breath.
And what makes "Wonderful As Always," a song with discussing, is exactly that--the variety of musical feels and atmospheres that the song jumps through like circus lions leaping through flaming hoops is impressive, if dizzying upon first listen.
Tying the overall composition together is both flawlessly executed production and a haunting melody, delivered nicely by Solbi. As her simple, almost conservative, melodic lines sound over the frenetic layers of synthesizers and guitars, there are shades of electro pop chanteuses of the past like Kate Bush or Debbie Harry.
But there is something else that makes "Wonderful As Always" stand out from the rest.
In the song's video, Solbi holds a camera on a GoPro as she walks down a city street and stares directly into the lens. If a singer can do that in vocal take, stare right at the lens, then that is what Solbi is doing on "Wonderful As Always."
