The breakthrough on the investigation began Thursday when the FBI released images of the two bombing suspects at approximately 5:20 p.m., Thursday.

Five hours later, around 10:20 p.m. there have been reports of a robbery at a convenience store near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge and a short 10-minutes later, the MIT university police officer was found shot in his vehicle. The police officer, Sean Collier, 26, was later pronounced dead at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

At 1 a.m. today, Friday, Watertown residents report hearing gunfire and the sounds of explosion in their suburban neighborhood. According to the police, the suspects reportedly threw explosives and exchanged gunfire with authorities. The “black hat” suspect or Suspect No. 1 as identified by the FBI, was wounded and a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officer was shot. Suspect No. 2 or the “white hat” suspect flees.

The wounded Suspect No. 1 was brought to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with "multiple traumatic injuries," according to doctors overseeing the patient. He was later pronounced dead. Classes at MIT, Harvard and other area school are canceled for the day.

At approximately 7 a.m. law enforcement officials identify the surviving Boston bombing marathon suspect as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass. They say the suspect who died is his brother.

Reports have also arised that a third man, who authorities believe was an accomplice of the bombing suspects, has been arrested.

Forty-five minutes later, law enforcement officials converged on a house in Watertown. Media crews reported hearing police on loudspeakers and urge someone inside to come out. Police activity in the area later dissipated.
