Serena And Venus Williams Help US Gain Victory Over Sweden In Fed World Cup Playoff

Tennis all-stars Serena and Venus Williams were back on the courts in Sweden over the weekend for the Fed World Cup Playoffs. Serena and Venus Williams helped the US gain a victory over Sweden.

Early Sunday morning, Serena Williams gave the US a 2-1 lead over Sweden when she faced off against Sofia Arvidsson. Serena Williams posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Arvidsson, who is ranked 54th.

Later on Sunday afternoon, Venus Williams was up against Johanna Larsson and bumped the US up to a 3-1 lead over Sweden.

Venus Williams needed 8 match-points in order to take the victory over Larsson. Venus Williams beat Larsson 6-3, 7-5 in their match.

Venus Williams was a last second sub by US team Capitan Mary Joe Fernandez. The Capitan made the decision to switch Venus Williams for Stephens, who lost against Arvidsson in their match earlier that weekend.

"The hardest thing was trying to decide when to play which one," Fernandez said according to the Washington Post. "At the end of the day, experience just goes a long way. Venus has been there so many times before."

"To have her in that clinching match for me was really important," Fernandez continued.

Venus Williams was eager to get out on the courts and play.

"To be honest, I wanted to be out there," the Washington Post says Venus Williams said. "I told Mary Joe yesterday I feel good, I feel positive. I pumped myself up and I wanted to be there for the team."

After the US defaulted the doubles match, the final score was 3-2, US. This guarantees the US a spot in the 2014 Fed Cup World Group.
