Reese Witherspoon Arrested For Disorderly Conduct; Actress Combative With Police As Husband Jim Toth Arrested For DUI

Reese Witherspoon's latest photo shoot likely wasn't one she ever envisioned having.

The actress says she is "deeply embarrassed" about her drunken behavior on Friday night, when she and her husband, agent Jim Toth, were both arrested - she for disorderly conduct and he for DUI. The pair were pulled over by a trooper in Atlanta after their car was spotted swerving in and out of its lane.

The cop noted that Toth had "droopy eyelids, watery, bloodshot eyes, and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol." He claimed to have only had one drink two hours earlier, but his blood alcohol measured at .139, well above the legal limit.

The trooper ordered Witherspoon to stay inside the car, but she resisted and tried to exit the vehicle twice, prompting him to threaten to arrest her if she left the car again. After taunting the trooper by hanging out the window, she exited the car for a third time and refused to get back inside, declaring that she is "a US citizen" and "free to stand on American ground."

As the cop began to arrest the Legally Blonde actress, she reportedly berated him and threw a fit.

"Do you know my name? You're about to find out who I am. You are going to be on national news," she said.

The pair were booked and released the same day. In a statement released late last night, Witherspoon apologized and accepted responsibility for her actions.

"I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," she said. "It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."

Witherspoon attended last night's premiere of her latest movie Mud, but declined to speak with reporters.
