Suspect's Aunt Threats: Maret Tsarnaeva, Aunt of Boston Bombers, Claims She's Been Threatened

Maret Tsarnaeva, the aunt of the men suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon, told reporters she thinks her nephews, Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, may have been framed. Since then, she says, she has received threats.

Tsarnaeva is the aunt of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his deceased brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who are accused of committing the Boston Marathon bombings. She told Canada's Sun News of the threats, saying "They are calling us, calling names, threatening, saying it's time to go home. Yes, it is time. We did not find that promise -- democracy -- in this country. But if I go home, I will go home only with bodies of my nephews."

Tsarnaeva spoke on Friday in Toronto about the case against her nephews in Boston. In the press conference, she claimed photographs showing Dzhokhar and Tamerlan at the scene of the bombing may be "staged" and that Dzhokhar and Tamerlan are being used as scapegoats.

"They made our boys enemies of the American nation," she said. "They made them victims of the conspiracy. ... They needed somebody to blame for something they committed themselves so they got them."

Tsarnaeva believes the boys are innocent, saying, "I know these two nephews -- smart boys, good boys -- they have no motive for that. They have no ideas to be going to this kind of act. It's just not the case, it cannot be true."

The suspects' mother has also believes her sons are innocent. Zubeidat Tsarnaeva spoke with Russia Today and claimed that Tamerlan was questioned by the FBI in 2011 following a tip from the Russian government suggesting he may have ties to a radical Islamic leader.

"They used to come [to our] home, they used to talk to me...they were telling me that he [Tamerlan] was really an extremist leader and that they were afraid of him," she told RT. "They told me whatever information he is getting, he gets from these extremist sites... they were controlling him, they were controlling his every step...and now they say that this is a terrorist act! Never ever is this true, my sons are innocent!"

Tamerlan, 26, died after a shootout with Boston police on Friday morning.  Federal terrorism charges may be filed this weekend against 19-year-old Dzhokhar. The bombing of the bombed the Boston Marathon on April 15 resulted in the death of three people and injury of more than 180. Dzhokhar may also face state murder charges relating to the death of MIT police officer Sean Collier.
