'80s Singer Gye Eun Sook Reportedly Sentenced To 18 Months In Jail For Drugs, Fraud

Former commercial model and 1980s singer Gye Eun Sook has reportedly been sentenced to serve 18 months in jail after being found guilty of habitual drug use and fraud, reports Yonhap News.

Gye was previously arrested in Japan in 2007 for drug possession and sentenced to 18 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended.

She had since been found by the court to have used illegal drugs repeatedly since 2012 such methamphetamine, more commonly known as meth. This led the court to push through with the jail sentence.

"While the defendant received a suspended sentence on Dec. 11, 2007 in Japan for violating the law on drug abuse, she used illegal drugs again in less than five years and has repeated use this year," the court explained in its decision.

Gye was also found guilty of fraud for a high-end foreign car she leased and put up as collateral, then failed to make payments.

Gye made her debut as a commercial model in the late 1970s, reports The Korea Times, and rose to popularity in the 1980s with hit tracks such as "Woman's Heart Waiting" and "Singing and Dancing." She then began promoting in Japan in the mid-1980s, where she also attracted fans.
