Illinois is home to one of America's most famous cities, Chicago. The same city is however one of the United State's most dangerous. In 2012 more people were shot and killed in Chicago than the number of soldiers fighting in Afghanistan.

RT.com says that the crime rate in 2012 had risen 50% from 2011. One factor blamed for the rise of gun violence includes the unusually warm weather and early spring Chicago had last year.

According to CBS's local Chicago affiliate the number of crimes in the city have stabilized since last year. In the first 4-months of 2013 there have been 70 murders a drop from the 120 murders committed in the same time frame last year.

Political leaders in Illinois are trying to get the same legislation that saw the penalty for gun violence increase in NYC passed for the hole of the state. Currently only Springfield, Illinois has passed the law.
