Ben Affleck A Doctor? ‘Argo’ Director To Receive Honorary Brown University Degree, Pledges To Live On $1.50 A Day For 'Live Below The Line' Challenge

Ben Affleck is being awarded a Brown University honorary degree at the school's 245th Commencement ceremony, making the Argo director officially Dr. Ben Affleck.

The Associated Press reported that Affleck is one of six artists, writers, scientists and educators selected to receive the honorary degree at the Ivy League school's graduation ceremony, to be held on May 26. Providence, Rhode Island's Brown University announced that it would give Ben Affleck a Doctor of Fine Arts degree in the wake of his Oscar win for Argo.

In addition to Ben Affleck, writer and MIT professor Junot Diaz; retired Stanford University bacteriologist Stanley Falkow; Tougaloo College president Beverly Wade Hogan; Medical Doctor Risa Lavizzo-Mourey; and Miami Dade College President Eduardo Padron will also be receiving honorary degrees from Brown.

Ben Affleck made news earlier this week when he pledged to live on just $1.50 per day as part of the Global Poverty Project's Live Below The Line campaign. On April 22, Affleck tweeted:

The Live Below the Line campaign seeks to raise awareness of the 1.4 billion people around the world living in poverty by challenging people to spend $1.50 on food and drink each day for a week. $1.50 represents the extreme poverty line in the United States, as estimated by the World Bank.

Affleck has a specific reason for participating in the challenge; in 2010 he founded the Eastern Congo Initiative, which is a U.S.-based advocacy and grant-making initiative seeking to provide economic and social development opportunities in East Congo.

Although Affleck pledged his participation in the Live Below The Line campaign specifically in support of East Congo, he is not the only celebrity getting involved in the initiative.

Josh Groban, Debi Mazar, Sophia Bush and Avengers star Tom Hiddleston are all have pledged to participate. Actor Hugh Jackman is on the project's board, and started participating in 2011.

The U.S. Live Below the Line Campaign will take place from April 29 to May 3. Anyone is encouraged to take part in the challenge. The official website says, "We recommend that you spend your entire budget of $7.50 at the start of the week. We recommend doing research and creating a shopping list, sticking to generic staples such as pasta, lentils, rice, bread, vegetables, potatoes and oats."
