'Sound Of A Flower', starring Suzy Bae of girl group miss A, was met with dismal results on its opening weekend, according to Korean news sites.
The movie was released on Wednesday, Nov. 25, and has received less than stellar attention, despite being headlined by Suzy, one of the most popular female stars in Korea, and experienced actor Ryu Seung Ryong. In the week since the movie was released, it has drawn in a mere 245,000 viewers, according to statistics compiled by the Korean Film Commission.
The movie is set in the year 1867 in Korea, in a time where women could not become performers of pansori, a type of dramatic story told through music, usually by a vocalist and a drummer. In order to attend the pansori school, Suzy's character must hide the fact that she is a woman.
Many critics blamed Suzy's lack of pansori skills as a reason for the movie's less-than-stellar performance. However, 'Sound Of A Flower' is facing fierce competition from other movies currently in theaters. The top 3 movies based on box office sales for the past weekend are 'Inside Men,' 'You Call it Passion,' and 'The Priests,' with 'Sound Of A Flower' in fourth place.
"Sound Of A Flower" is Suzy's first return to the big screen since "Architecture 101" was released in 2012.
