Over A Decade Later, 'Samurai Jack' Returns To Cartoon Network With 2016 Season

"Samurai Jack" may have entered into the best Christmas season yet, following the recent confirmation its return to Cartoon Network.

On Wednesday, Adult Swim officially premiered a brief teaser for "Samurai Jack," with a release date set for some time in 2016. Given that the television series ended in 2004, many fans were surprised by the announcement.

"Creator and executive producer Genndy Tartakovsky continues the epic story with a new season," wrote Adult Swim on Facebook.

According to iO9, the series will once again be produced by Cartoon Network Studios and the new season will premiere on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block next year.

Currently, "Samurai Jack" is trending worldwide on Twitter. Speculation is already building over who may voice the demonic wizard Aku. For those who do not know, the original voice actor for Aku, Mako Iwamatsu, passed away in 2006.

In 2013, IDW Publishing announced a partnership with Cartoon Network Enterprises to produce comics based on its properties, one of which included "Samurai Jack."

"Many of these Cartoon Network shows have only grown in popularity since they originally aired," said Chris Ryall, IDW's Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief in an official press release.

After 20 issues following the continuing adventures of Jack, the comic series concluded in May of this year.

"Working on Jack has been a project that felt just as creative and expansive as any creator-owned work I've done," wrote comic creator Jim Zub.

"Almost every single idea we pitched was enthusiastically approved by IDW and Cartoon Network. We told the stories we wanted to tell the way we wanted to tell them and, from everything I've seen and the people I've met, the fans thoroughly enjoyed them too. That's a rare and wonderful thing and I won't take it for granted."
