Digger Phelps Cancer Diagnosis: The ESPN Analyst Says He's Been Diagnosed With Bladder Cancer

Digger Phelps cancer diagnosis: ESPN college basketball analyst Digger Phelps announced he was diagnosed with bladder cancer on Friday.

ESPN told the Associated Press that Phelps has had surgery and will start follow-up treatment next week near his home in South Bend, Ind. after the Digger Phelps cancer diagnosis was announced Friday.

Digger Phelps' cancer diagnosis happened 20 years after being an analyst with ESPN. He is known for having a colored highlighter that always matches the color of his neckties.

During his career as a head college basketball coach, he went 419-200 as a head coach with Fordham and Notre Dame. Phelps coached for 20 seasons at Notre Dame. In 14 of those seasons, the team had 20 or more victories.

His most memorable victory might have been when Notre Dame ended the 88-game record breaking winning streak of the UCLA Bruins in 1974. He also leads the nation in most victories over the number one ranked team in the country.

In the 1977-1978 season, he led Notre Dame to the final four, which was his only appearance there.

After his coaching career ended, he briefly worked for the Office of National Drug Control Policy in the administration of George H.W. Bush and also served as an observer in the 1993 elections in Cambodia.
