Qatar Insists Nude Statues By Greece At Olympic Exhibition Be Veiled, Greece Responded By Removing Two Ancient Statues Of Nude Males

Qatar required nude statues sent by Greece at an Olympic exhibition in Doha to be veiled. Qatari authorities wanted the ancient statues of nude males’ genitalia covered in black cloth.

The MailOnline reports that a Culture Ministry official said that exhibition organizers wanted to avoid scandalizing female visitors.

However, Greek Deputy Culture Minister Costas Tzavaras, who was at the Muslim country last month for the exhibit’s opening, said that the works should be displayed as is or be pulled out from the exhibition and shipped back to Greece.

As of the time of this writing, the nude male statues have been returned to Greece, a Culture Ministry source confirmed with the Agence-France-Presse. The source added that, “Organizers in Qatar wanted to cover up statues’ members with black cloth. So they were never put on display, they want back to into storage and returned April 19.”

The statues arrived in Athens last week, according to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to comment on the issue.

Qatari officials could not immediately be reached for their comments on the issue Thursday night, according to MailOnline.

The statues date to the 6th and 2nd centuries BC, according to the Associated Press. They were among nearly 600 antiquities sent by Greece for the “Olympics – Past and Present” exhibition.
