4Minute Embraces Sexy and Sensual Image With Controversial 'What's Your Name?'

Since their 2009 debut, K-Pop girl group 4Minute has been known for their "sexually suggestive" image.

In August of that year, 4Minute received some negative press when one of the leading South Korean television and radio network, KBS, prohibited the playing of their single "Won't Give You." The network stated the lyrics were inappropriate and overly sexual.

Since then, sexual controversy seems to follow the girls around wherever they go and member HyunA is often at the forefront.

The 20-year-old singer may be young, but her sex appeal knows no bounds. Not only was she chosen by Psy to appear in his "Gangnam Style" music video, but she has a thriving solo career of her own outside of 4Minute.

Known for her skimpy clothing and provocative dance moves, HyunA is constantly under attack from the press and netizens for being "too sexual" and inappropriate.

Last November, HyunA appeared on MBC's Section TV Celebrity Entertainment and talked about the her sexy image stirring up controversy and how difficult it was to deal with initially.

"It was a little hard during my high school times, that's the truth. I've thought of how I wanted to bear this," she admitted. "Now, I think it simply as a talent of my own."

And not only has HyunA embraced her sex appeal, but the other members of 4Minute as well, as evidenced by their latest single and music video, "What's Your Name?"

The video is getting a lot of backlash from the Korean media and fans, but in the US, it is being praised for the over-the-top sexuality.

Korean netizens are always quick with commentary, and the response to "What's Your Name?" is no different. Commenters are calling for the lyrics and dance moves to be banned from broadcast. The girls of 4Minute (and especially HyunA) have been attacked for being "desperate for attention" and the video for being "not sexy or powerful at all, just dirty."

On the other hand, in a Billboard review of the new song, the overt sexuality is "a major draw to viewers who will, ideally, buy the catchy single."

Perhaps it all comes down to cultural differences, but any way you look at it, "What's Your Name?" is an attempt by 4Minute to show a more matured side to their sexuality. With direct lyrics and a fun, catchy beat, the latest single is a good step forward for the group.

And, in the face of ongoing controversy over their songs and image, the girls have presented a new single and provocative video to show the world that they will continue to be who they are despite what the public might say or think.
