'Mr. Robot' Season 2 Update: The surprisingly populsar psychological thriller/drama series Mr. Robot debuted on USA this summer starring Rami Malek's meek IT wizard Elliot Alderson, a hacker with a psychologically troubled mind and multiple personalities.
Variety reported that series creator/showrunner Sam Esmail plans to direct all 10 episodes of the show's second season himself. This isn't new and it worked to bring a singular vision to True Detective Season 1 where all the episodes were directed by Cary Fukunaga) and both seasons of The Knick, which were all directed by Steven Soderbergh.
The Mr. Robot season 2 release date about a year away.
"We are really happy that people are seeing the same things that we see in a show that we love so much," USA Network president Chris McCumber told Variety.
"The competition is so intense - there's so many great shows deserving of recognition and of people's time. It's very hard to break through."
"You have to find voices that are relevant and great storytellers and have such a specific vision," McCumber said. "In Sam we have found that."
"Mr. Robot" was one of the most nominated TV series at the Golden Globes awards. It was for best drama series and stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater each were nominated. Malek picked up a SAG Awards nomination last week, along with nominations from the Writers Guild for new series.
During "Mr. Robot" season 1 Malek's Elliot got hooked up with a movement to take down corporate evil-doers. Elliot, a hacker, targets Evil Corp as part of "fsociety," siding with Mr. Robot, played by Christian Slater. Elliot looks for the connection is between him, Mr. Robot, and Darlene (Carly Chaikin). Vulture talked to Rami Malek and Sam Esmail at the IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards to spill some coded secrets about Mr. Robot season 2.
"I will say this, it doesn't get any easier for any one of the characters on the show - especially myself," Malek told Vulture.
"After [Sam] pitched me this season, I called my agents and said, I don't really feel inclined to do anything between now and then. Because it's going to require a lot of energy."
It looks like we'll be seeing more of BD Wong in season 2 of Mr. Robot.
"[BD Wong] is amazing in the first season," Esmail told Vulture. I'd be a fool not to bring him back."
TV Line released the list of the Screen Actors Guild's 2016 nominations. Malek will be going up against Bod Odenkirk of "Better Call Saul," Jon Hamm of "Mad Men," Kevin Spacey of "House of Cards," and Peter Dinklage of HBO's "Game of Thrones."
"It's an incredibly special moment. I think the one thing that hit me was- I thought about everybody who helped to get me where I am, pulled for me, from actors to directors I've respected, casting directors, but most of all my family pulling for me every step of the way...This moment is going to be etched in my memory no matter what happens in the future," Malek told E! News' Kristin Dos Santos.
The 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be broadcasted on Saturday, January 30 on both TNT and TBS.
