Beastie Boys Memoir: Brooklyn MC’s Sign Book Deal For Atypical Biography, To Be “Multidimensional Experience”

One year after losing one of their founding members, the late Adam "MCA" Yauch, the Beastie Boys are putting out a memoir. The remaining Beastie Boys, Michael "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz are writing a book about their experiences in the iconic Brooklyn band.

The Beastie Boys' memoir was signed into a book deal through Random House Publishing Group's Spiegel & Grau - the same imprint that published Jay-Z's 2010 book "Decoded."

The New York Times reported that the Beastie Boys memoir is planned for a fall 2015 release.

The memoir is yet untitled, and it is certain that the memoir will not be a typical one. The NYT reported that the Beastie Boys are "interested in challenging the form and making the book a multidimensional experience. There is a kaleidoscopic frame of reference, and it asks the reader to keep up," explained Spiegel & Grau publisher Julie Grau.

The book will be edited by Sacha Jenkins, a hip-hop journalist, and will be "loosely structured as an oral history" with "strong visual component[s]" in addition to containing contributions from other writers.

Luke Janklow, the Beastie Boys' agent, said, "The first words out of Mike's mouth were, 'I don't want to do a straight memoir.'"

The Times report explained that Luke Janklow had been in talks years ago about writing a memoir.

However, the discussions were pushed aside when Yauch's health deteriorated and led to his death. Janklow said, "After Yauch died, I didn't push them, but I think that Adam and Mike ended up realizing that it was the right time for them."

Yauch died on May 4, 20012 after battling cancer for three years. He was 47 at the time of his death.
