Tony Award Nominations Announced: Tom Hanks' Play 'Lucky Guy' Receives 6, 'Kinky Boots' Gets 13, While Rival 'Matilda' Gets 12

The nominations for the 67th annual Tony Awards were announced this morning at 8:30 p.m. EST, and "Kinky Boots" took home the most nominations with 13. Rival "Matilda" got one less with 12, while Tom Hanks' play "Lucky Guy" received 6 nominations and the revival "Golden Boy" led all plays with 8 nominations total.

The biggest horse race is the one for best musical, with a lot of deserving productions this year, including "Bring It On," "Matilda," "Kinky Boots," and "A Christmas Story," but only "Kinky Boots" and "Matilda," who took home the top two number of nominations this morning, should be the only real competitors in the Best Musical category.

"Matilda" is a song and dance production based off the Roald Dahl book of the same name, written for the stage by Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin. It received some of the best reviews for its musical adaptation of the story of an underdog girl who acquires telekinetic powers.

"Kinky Boots" features music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, and a book by Harvey Fierstein based off the real life story behind the 2005 film about a struggling shoemaker and his drag queen business partner.

Awarded by a panel of over 700 judges from the entertainment industy and the press, the Tony Awards are the theatre equivalent of the Oscars for film, the Grammy's for music and the Emmy's for the top performers in television.
