Georgia Integrated Prom: School In Georgia Holds First De-Segregated Prom

Georgia Integrated Prom: High school students in Wilcox County, Georgia went to their first integrated prom this weekend.

Despite the fact that it has been 60 years since the Supreme Court put an end to "separate but equal," the Georgia school did not have an integrated prom; they have attended segregated proms since 1971. Earlier this month, four Wilcox County High School seniors started a movement to integrate their senior prom.

"This is South Georgia, it's not something you see everyday. It's about time people start recognizing," one student said.

The students started a Facebook page asking for donations and support. The Facebook group garnered nearly 30,000 "likes" - and, more importantly, enough money to rent a ballroom and buy gift bags for the attendees.

The four senior girls who started the movement had a simple motivation for starting the group: they wanted to go to prom together. Two are white and two are black. Students Stephanie Sinnot, Mareshia Rucker, Quanesha Wallace and Keela Bloodworth started the group. Roughly equal numbers of white and black students signed up for the integrated prom.

Officially-speaking, Wilcox County High School never sponsored a segregated prom. After official de-segregation of the school, the proms became private, invitation-only events sponsored by students' parents.

Even the president of the Georgia chapter of the NAACP got invovled, asking the school board to make changes. School administrators and teachers say they will speak to students and, hopefully, provide a school-sponsored solution for next year.

Wilcox County, Georgia is one of the only areas in the country that still has segregated events to this extent. Last year, the school finally had a segregated homecoming. The integrated prom last week went off seamlessly. "This was amazing, this has been completely surreal. I am content and happy," one student told reporters.
