Mother Shot Holding Baby: Sherri Williams Shot Dead By Stray Bullet While Holding 10 Day Old Son in Alabama[VIDEO Report]

An Alabama mother was shot and killed while standing in the doorway of her apartment holding her 10-day-old baby boy.

24-year-old Sherri Williams, was holding her baby and Gate City neighborhood when shots were fired Monday afternoon.

There was an altercation across the street. Two shooters at a nearby store got into a violent dispute resulting into gunshots. One of the men chased the other down the street and fired a gun as he ran. The deceased wasn't the intended target.

Authorities say Williams was going about her business and not paying attention when she was hit by a stray bullet in the chest, and fell onto a couch with the newborn still cradles in her arms.

Sherri Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooters have not been found yet. Witnesses recall seeing two shooters; male and female African-Americans. The woman has long braids, which might be identifiable. The "Bonny and Clyde" type duo were escaping the scene in a black Chrysler Sebring Sedan.

"It's even more sad because she was holding her infant in her arms, when she was shot.  Fortunately, the baby was not injured," Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams told MyFoxAlabama.com. "We need the public to step forward on this, give us all the information they have so we can get this person off the street."

Their own feud had nothing to do with Ms. Williams but now the newborn will grow up without his mother.  What a tragedy.
