2013 Webby Award Winners Announced: Obama, Frank Ocean, ‘House of Cards,’ Grimes Among Honorees Of Internet Awards

The Webby Awards, the leading international awards that honor excellence on the internet, officially announced the winners of the 17th annual ceremony on Tuesday, April 30. The Webbys is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS).

This year, House of Cards producers Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti are being given a Webby Special Achievement award. House of Cards, a political thriller released on Netflix, proved that digital media can produce quality drama. The Kevin Spacey-produced show is the first digital series nominated for a best drama Emmy.

Other 17th annual Webby Awards winners include Justin Bieber, The Onion and Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight blog for the New York Times. Bieber won for the social media campaign for his fragrance launch and The Onion for best comedy site, according to the Associated Press.

Frank Ocean received the Webby Person of the Year award. The Webbys praised the R&B singer "for proving the power of the Web as a medium for cultural change when he announced his bisexuality to his Tumblr community."

The awards committee said that Ocean's personal letter about his first love (that happened to be towards another man) challenged "stereotypes historically ingrained in hip-hop and R&B music" and brought those issues to the spotlight.

Another well-known winner of the Internet award is Jerry Seinfeld for his 10-episode web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The show featured Seinfeld hanging out with his comedian friends.

Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe won Athlete of the Year for his tweets supporting gay marriage.

GIF file inventor Steve Wilhite will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award. Wilhite created the 8-bit GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format, which is the most widely used internet medium for lo-fi viral sharing.

President Barack Obama will also be honored for his campaign's use of technology in the 2012 presidential election.

The Webby Artist of the Year award will go to Claire Boucher, better known as Grimes.

Although the winners have already been announced, the Webby Award ceremony will take place on May 21 and be hosted by Patton Oswalt in New York. The ceremony will be available for streaming the following day. Award winners' acceptance speeches will be limited to 5-words per person.
