The Michelle Obama Procedure: New Upper-Arm Plastic Surgery Trend

The Michelle Obama Procedure: The First Lady's wife is inspiring a new plastic surgery trend. Michelle Obama's arms have stimulated women throughout the country to get upper arm lifts due, at least in part, to her famously defined biceps.

Michelle Obama-esque pper arm lift procedures have increased more than 4,300 percent, plastic surgeons announced. The number of upper arm lift surgeries of both liposuction and brachioplasty, which restructures the under portion of the upper arm, has risen. Rates for these procedures  have skyrocketed from 300 women in the year 2000 to more than 15,000 in 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

In a press release, ASPS president Dr. Gregory Evans said "Women are paying more attention to their arms in general and are becoming more aware of options to treat this area."

The ASPS found that women wanted their arms to look like Michelle Obama's the most. The other top five celebrity arms patients decided to surgically alter their bodies in an effort to resemble were Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Biel, Demi Moore, and Kelly Ripa.

Brachioplasty can leave a visible scar from the elbow to the armpit. As with any surgery, there is a risk of permanent injury or death. The typical cost of a brachioplasty in New York City ranges from $9,000 to $12,000; it is not covered by insurance.

The ASPS press release illustrated one woman, Natalie Robinson, 24, Knoxville, Tenn., who said she was particularly inspired by Michelle Obama's arms.

Robinson lost 170 pounds but had excess skin around her upper arms, so she had it cut off. "Every time I looked in the mirror there was a reminder of a heavier person and I just couldn't get rid of it," Robinson said in the press release.

The trend's popularity is, in part, due to women who have lost massive amounts of weight via bariatric surgery or diet and exercise, and want to lose the "batwing'' skin drooping from their arms. They decide to undergo a brachioplasty.

Another factor is that "celebrities from the White House to the red carpet may be having an influence,'' the ASPS said.
